Frequently Asked Questions About Threading, Waxing, Facials and Henna

Threading

What is threading?

Threading is a hair removal technique that has been practiced for centuries. Facial hair is removed swiftly yet meticulously from the most delicate areas of the face by knotting off thread and creating a trap that forces out hair by the root. It is the best alternative to waxing and tweezing, especially for sensitive skin. Unlike waxing, threading does not remove a layer of skin, which can leave the skin on your face susceptible to sun damage. By far the least invasive method of facial hair removal, threading can target individual hairs to get the precise shape and smooth finish you want.

What does threading feel like? Does it hurt?

Threading is comparable to tweezing or waxing. You may feel a pinching or light scraping sensation, but most customers agree that threading is no more uncomfortable than other hair removal methods.

How long does threading take?

A simple eyebrow threading can take just 5-10 minutes. The upper lip takes about 5 minutes; a full face thread takes about 20-30 minutes.

What areas of the body can be threaded?

Eyebrows

• Sideburns

• Lip

• Chin

• Fingers/hands

• Toes/feet

What are the benefits of waxing vs. threading?

• Threading does not peel off a layer of skin

• Hair does not grow back as fast

• The skin doesn’t usually get red and irritated

• Threading can target individual hairs

• Hair only needs to grow just above the skin to get threaded

• Over time, hair becomes finer and more sparse

• Threading will pick up the finest hairs from the surface of the skin

How long does threading last?

Depending on your hair type and area of the face, full re-growth can be anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks. Hair will start to grow back sparse and finer after repeated threading because hair is pulled out at the root, which weakened it. You can get re-threaded as soon hair grows just above the skin, whereas with waxing the hair needs to be at least 2/8” long before it can be removed again.

If I get my full face threaded, will the hair grow back darker?

No. Since hairs are being removed from the root they actually tend to grow back finer over time.

Why does the esthetician put the thread in her mouth?

The thread must be pulled taut in order to accurately and precisely remove each hair. However, the thread that touches the esthetician’s mouth never touches your face.

Is it okay to get threaded if you have sensitive skin?

Yes. However, depending on your sensitivity level, you may experience redness or minor bumps at site, but it should subside in 10-15 minutes. In rare cases, the area may remain red for an hour or two. If you tend to break out after treatment, we recommend not using the lotion or aloe gel that your esthetician usually applies. Refrain from using face products for a few hours until the area is less sensitive. If you develop a rash that does not subside, call your dermatologist.

Can I specify how I want my brows shaped?

Yes! Before you begin, let your esthetician know how you want your brows shaped and how thick or thin you’d like them.

My brows don’t have a natural arch, is it possible to get them shaped that way?

Absolutely, but be aware that to create an arched look, our estheticians will need to remove more hair which creates a thinner brow. If you want a thicker brow shaped to your natural contours, we don’t recommend the arched look.

I over tweezed. How long should I wait before my next threading appointment?

Although hair can be removed once it’s grown above the surface of the skin, we recommend waiting for about two weeks to give your eyebrows a chance to grow back in so your esthetician can give you the shape you want. You can come in anytime for a “clean up.”

What should I do to prepare for threading?

Let your hair grow just above the skin and you’re ready. If you want a new or different shape to your brows, let them grow a bit but do not tweeze them so your esthetician can see their natural shape before suggesting the best shape for your face.

Is it safe to get threaded after cosmetic surgery?

Check with your doctor about the specific healing time for your procedure and inquire how long you should wait until to resume threading.

Bikini Waxing

What is a bikini wax?

A basic bikini wax removes the hair visible outside of your panty line, including the inner thigh area if necessary, and the top of bikini line, creating a clean triangle shape.

What is a Brazilian bikini wax?

There are two kinds -- the semi-Brazilian and the Full Brazilian. The semi-Brazilian is similar to a regular bikini wax, but it goes in much further from the panty line, leaving a small patch of hair in the middle often called a “landing strip.”

A full Brazilian bikini wax removes all the hair from the lip back to the thong area, leaving you completely bare.

How long does my hair have to be before getting waxed?

At least 1/4” long, so it lays flat against your skin.

Should I trim my hair before my appointment?

No. If your hair needs to be trimmed, your esthetician will do it as part of the waxing session.

Do I have to take off my underwear to get a bikini wax?

We provide disposable panties to wear during your wax so you don’t risk getting wax on your underwear. If you’re having other areas waxed, like your arms or underarms, you can request a cape to cover yourself so you can remove your bra.

Can I get a bikini wax while I have my period?

Though some clients have come in on the lightest day of their periods, we don’t recommend getting a bikini wax while you have your period for both sanitary and comfort reasons. When menstruating, your skin is more sensitive, amplifying the discomfort of biking waxing.

Is it okay to have sex the same day I get a bikini wax?

The area may be sore but if it’s comfortable for you then go for it! To reduce your chance of infection for a day or two after waxing, consider washing the area after sex.

Is it safe to get a bikini wax if I’m pregnant?

Yes, though we recommend consulting your doctor first.

I have a big event coming up, how long before should I schedule my bikini wax?

In order to keep your schedule as stress-free as possible, and to let sensitivity subside, we recommend coming in at least 48 hours before your event.

I shave my bikini area, but now I want to try waxing. How long do I need to wait before getting my first wax?

Wait at least two weeks for your hair to grow back before getting waxed. Once your hair is at least 1/4” long (meaning it lays flat against your skin) you’re ready for your first wax!

Will I get fresh wax for my session?

At Thread we only use clean wax. We never double dip -- clean wax is poured into a disposable cup at the beginning of each waxing session and thrown out after every use as are the applicator sticks. For added protection, our estheticians wear non-latex gloves.

My esthetician used scissors when giving me a bikini wax. Is that sanitary?

Yes. All of our equipment -- scissors, tweezers and brushes -- are disinfected in Barbicide after every use.

What kind of rubber gloves to use? I’m allergic to latex.

We only use non-latex gloves at Thread.

How often should I get a bikini wax?

Depending on how long if takes for your hair to grow to at least 1/4” long (meaning it lays flat against your skin). The average is 3-5 weeks.

What type of wax to you use?

Honey wax for sensitive skin. It’s great at removing hair without irritating your skin.

How should I prepare for a bikini wax?

• Come clean, but do not use lotion

• Don’t shave for at least 2 weeks, hair needs to be at least 1/4” long, meaning it lays flat against your skin.

• Wear loose clothing -- tight jeans can be uncomfortable after a wax

• Arrive a few minutes early so you have a minute to relax before the session begins

• Budget your time – a wax can take any from 10 to 40 minutes depending on the kind of bikini wax you get.

After wax care

Do not use any products on the area for at least 48 hours, including lotion (or worse, alcohol). To soothe the area you can try TendSkin or Rosewater or organic aloe to reduce irritation and prevent ingrown hairs.

Should I get threaded before or after my facial?

Ideally, you should have those services on different days. If you can’t, we recommend getting threaded after your facial. Even though we use gentle products for our facials, you should avoid skin products for few hours after your threading session.

Eyelash Extensions

By appointment only at our 33rd and Nassau Street locations.

Going to a special event? Let Thread enhance your lashes for a beautiful, sophisticated look. Choose short or medium lashes for an enhanced natural look or long lashes to for a more dramatic effect. Our specialist will apply each individual lash with black adhesive to your natural lashes. Because lash extensions last a few days to a week, we suggest that you come in on the day of your special event. Our specialist will add a few extra lashes to prevent a patchy look should a few fall out.

How do I take care of eyelash extensions?

Don’t use mascara or harsh cleansers because they will shorten the lifespan of your eyelash extensions.

How do I remove my eyelash extensions?

Pick up an adhesive remover at your local drugstore, usually located near the fake eyelashes.

Henna

What is henna?

Henna is a natural reddish-brown dye used for temporary tattoos and hair dye (we don’t do hair at Thread). It’s made into a mud-like paste that is applied to any part of the body to create a long-lasting temporary tattoo in a design of your choice. It’s completely painless. It’s simply drawn onto the skin, like piping on a cake. Once the henna is fully dried it will cake off the skin to reveal a beautiful henna tattoo.

How do I choose a design?

You can bring in a design to show to our henna artists or let them create one for you.

How long does it take?

Application time depends on the intricacy and size of the design. It could be as little as 10 minutes or up to a full hour. It will take an addition 30-45 minutes to dry, and we suggest that you remain in the salon until the henna is dry.

How long does it last?

Henna tattoos are temporary --they last anywhere from 1 week to 3 weeks, depending on skin type. We recommend that you don’t apply any water, lotion or oils to henna tattoo on the day it’s applied.

Do I need an appointment?

We encourage appointments, that way we can guarantee a fresh batch of henna will be waiting for you. We do not use henna with any additives, and we do not use black henna because it’s not natural and can cause rashes on certain skin types.

Safety

How does Thread protect its customers?

All of our equipment -- scissors, tweezers and brushes -- are disinfected in Barbicide after every use. We rotate all of our tools so they can be sanitized in the Barbicide for the proper amount of time. We also use disposable panties for all of our wax treatments and we never double dip our wax! Thread estheticians wear non-latex rubber gloves during all waxing and facial sessions.
